Hour of Code

For the past couple years I have participated in the National Hour of Code by being a volunteer teacher at various schools around the DC Area.

One of my favorite parts about volunteering for the Hour of Code is the ability to work with kids at various grade levels. My responsibilities as a volunteer included:

  • Introducing myself and background in technology

  • Leading discussions on student's thoughts on technology

  • Introducing basic programming concepts

  • Aiding students while they completed Hour of Code activities

At one of the schools, I have been invited back several times to teach their sixth grade classes additional lessons on how design works in technology. During these lessons the students were broken into groups and asked to brainstorm problems affecting their community, and how might they use technology to solve it.

Some of the awesome ideas these 11 year old designers brainstormed included:

  • Smart air filters for the environment

  • Reminder robots for the elderly

  • Water rovers to clean the rivers

  • Wearable watch to check blood sugar

  • Aquatic litter collector

  • Help disabled children make more friends

  • A translator for students of different languages

  • A class notes takes for slow writers

  • A smart vice activated lock for latch key kids
